Ancient Terracotta Figurines: Evidence and Provenance Checklist

A small clay figure can resemble a famous museum object and still be a much later reproduction. Figurines vary widely in purpose, technique and origin. It is more responsible to record the observable evidence than to make a confident date claim from a single photograph.

Record the shape and construction

Photograph the front, rear, base and sides with a scale. Note mold seams, solid or hollow construction, openings and later attachments. These observations can help a specialist identify parallels, but they do not prove an ancient date on their own.

Do not invent provenance

A seller’s phrase such as “from an old collection” needs supporting dates, ownership records and legal documentation. Preserve correspondence, catalog references and invoices exactly as received. If there is a gap in ownership history, label it as a gap.

Seek professional conservation advice

Aggressive cleaning, solvent tests and home abrasion can destroy surface evidence. A specialist can determine whether laboratory testing would answer a useful question and what its limitations are. Even a plausible scientific result does not establish lawful title.

Check the legal context

Import, export and cultural-property rules differ across origins and transactions. Consult competent specialists and official national guidance before acquiring, shipping or selling material with uncertain history.

A practical example

An inherited figure arrives with a handwritten card reading “Roman, grandfather’s collection.” That is a useful clue, not proof of Roman age or a complete ownership history. Photograph the card, ask relatives for dated photos or receipts, and document the object without cleaning it. A specialist may be able to identify a plausible style, while legal and provenance questions remain open until supported.
